The Knockdhu distillery, meaning black hill, was built in 1893 by DCL (Distillers Company Limited) near Knock Hill, near the source at Knock Hill. Until the economic crisis of the 80s of the XX century, whiskey from the Knockdhu distillery was very popular in Scotland. In 1983 the plant was briefly closed. In 1988, it was bought by Inver House, which resumed production the following year. To avoid confusion with the Knockando distillery, the name was changed to An Cnoc.
