Родиной мерло (Merlot) является Франция. И, несмотря на то, что по своей известности этот сорт уступает каберне, он занимает более 60% процентов красных виноградников в этом регионе. В противовес крупным шато, производители мерло делали вина с крохотных виноградников: ягоды собирались и отбирались вручную, урожайность была максимально ограничена, вина выдерживались в новом дубе и за счет этого виноделы достигали феноменальной насыщенности вкуса. Количество ежегодно выпускаемых бутылок было таково, что все производство могло уместиться в гараже. Мерло отлично сочетается с едой. Округлые, фруктовые вина прекрасно дополнят блюда из утки или гуся. Хорошим сопровождением станут разнообразные паштеты, мясные рагу и вяленое мясо.
