Surprisingly, black rice is actually not related to real rice. Black rice, or wild rice as it is also called, is an annual plant of the cereal family that looks and tastes similar to its closest relative, traditional rice. The process of harvesting it is incredibly difficult: to this day, the grains are harvested by hand, paddling to inaccessible riverbanks in canoes. Rice tastes good as a black risotto and is also a great ingredient in light salads and soups.
