Basmati is an elite variety of long-grain rice with a special aroma that has been traditionally grown on the Indian subcontinent for several thousand years. In the Hindi language, ‘basmati’ means ‘aromatic, fragrant’. The highest quality basmati rice is produced in the Karnal region of Haryana, India, which is known as the ‘Rice Bowl of India’. Throughout history, this type of rice has always been valued by the rulers of India and Persia. In order for the grains to acquire their unique flavour, rice must be aged for 9-18 months.
