Questions and Answers about Brands

Coca-Cola did not create the legend of Santa Claus. But Coca-Cola advertising did play a major role in shaping this cheerful image as we know it today. Until 1931, the world imagined Santa Claus in different ways: sometimes a tall, thin old man, then an elf, there was even a scary Claus. But in 1931, Coca-Cola commissioned illustrator Haddon Sundblom to draw Santa for Christmas advertising campaigns. Thus, the image of Santa was first created as an attractive, kind character with rosy cheeks, a white beard, and sparkling, squinting, cheerful eyes. Sundblom drew inspiration from Clement Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” better known as “It Was the Night Before Christmas.”
In May 1886, ophthalmologist John S. Pemberton, a pharmacist in Atlanta, Georgia, created the syrup for Coca-Cola. He took a jug of the new product to Jacobs’ Drugstore in Atlanta. There, the syrup was deemed excellent and was offered for sale as a carbonated drink for five cents a glass. Dr. Pemberton’s accountant, Frank Robinson, suggested the name Coca-Cola.
